Last updated: September 22nd, 2019 What are you supposed to do when someone despises you for being ADHD and unprofessional?
Do everything.
Do everything that you can – except sit there silently like the good little boy or girl that society wants you to be.
Being ADHD and unprofessional is surprisingly a good thing
When people tell you that you’re unprofessional, this is actually a good thing.
This means that you choose to live life according to your own terms, not the expectations that other people have for you.
Is having ADHD almost like a “filter” that makes you perceive the world however you want?
Yeah, I think so.
If you’re anything like me, then you have a hard time working with customers and clients. You have a difficult time meeting the professional demands of Human Resources, and the rest of society for that matter. Because, these small aspects of life just don’t matter in the big picture.
Your vision matters. Helping people who are in pain matters. At the end of the day, your mission matters above all else.
How are you supposed to make a living while being ADHD and unprofessional?
I’m going to tell you something right now that a lot of people will disagree with.
A lot of people might actually hate me for saying this.
But, the truth is that it’s the best time in history to be an unprofessional human being while living with ADHD.
Yes, I just eliminated all of the excuses that you might have told yourself in the past. (See why some people might dislike you for telling the truth?)
The reality is that there are thousands of opportunities for you to “choose yourself”.
You can work from home. You can start a business. You can become an artist, or even an organic dairy farmer if you really want to. There’s so much valuable information available for people with ADHD to thrive. The secrets have been exposed. In fact, there’s actually too much information available (I know I’m contributing to the problem).
At the end of the day, you just have to find a way to focus on how you can give people value while being the unprofessional with ADHD that you truly are.
There’s no point in hiding your true self.
But, you have every reason to keep fighting until you can live entirely on your terms.
What should you tell people who say that you’re unprofessional (even though you have ADHD)?
By this point, you’re probably thinking…
“I have real responsibilities. I can’t just admit to my colleagues and boss that I’m an unprofessional jerk with ADHD. That’s insane.”
Yes, I understand this.
And, you’re exactly right. You probably shouldn’t go around telling people that you’re unprofessional. And, you definitely shouldn’t be a jerk to most people, either.
That isn’t going to pay the bills.
So, just do what you have to do until you can live life entirely on your terms.
Embrace the opportunities that you have as you fight and claw your way through life’s “professional” matrix.
Even if you have to put on a professional act at your corporate gig, just keep in mind that you can always design your life in the way that you want.
Work a side job if you must. Find your passion. Pursue your dreams after work, until you can make your vision a full-time reality.
But, please don’t entirely submit to the “professional” demands of society.
If you have ADHD, going the “professional” route probably isn’t going to be congruent with who you truly are.
Or maybe it is? Who am I to judge?
Just make sure that you fight until you can live life how you want. Every single day.
Ignore the people who actively resent your vision and passion. Don’t give in. Use that vital energy for helping others and pursuing your mission.
That’s the unprofessional ADHD way that you know and love.

Thank you for this article – I needed the reminder not to hide my true self. I just got my dream job but people are turning cold on me again, most likely because I’m blind to social cues. But you know what? The world is gonna have to make room for me, much like the way I’ve made room for it. What am I doing in an office anyway? I’m a goddamned writer!

Haha I like that attitude! Nice one SeedyVine.
